My friend Jenn and I have decided to get involved in the DC racing circuit. We're starting off with the St. Patrick's Day 8k on Sunday, March 14th, and it's going to be freeezing! I'm already stock piling warm running clothes. At least I can look forward to a green beer afterwards :)

We're about five weeks out from the race at this point, and I've barely done any training. Oops! DC has had a unusually bad winter in terms of cold temperatures and snow, and I'm using that as my main excuse for not getting out enough and running. I know I know, excuses, excuses. I've been doing a lot of cardio at the gym (including the treadmill), but it's not the same as hitting the pavement. I feel like I'm running out of time to get in shape for the race, but hopefully with some regular weekly runs, I'll survive it. Any tips for training/racing in the cold would be much appreciated!
Eventually, I hope to work up to the 10k/10 mile distances. We've thrown out the idea of running the Army Ten Miler next fall, so that's something fun to think about for now. Anyone have a favorite spring/summer race in the DC area that they would recommend? I've heard that the Cherry Bloossoms 5k race is another good one.
Chic Runner and The Fit Bride are two running blogs that I follow -- both are very inspirational and have a ton of great tips for the beginner runner (or more experienced). It's really nice to read about other's triumphs and challenges, and it makes dealing with my own running-related issues that much easier. Plus, they have a ton of good reviews on runnning swag. Love me some swag!

Olivia
