Family Matters

Wednesday, February 2, 2011 | by Olivia | Labels: , | 1 comments

The gay marriage topic is obvisouly a hotly debated one, so I'm not going to get on a soapbox here.  That being said, regardless of which side of the fence you're on, I encourage everyone to watch this clip and listen to Zach's story.

It's not often that we hear from the children of gay parents, and I think it took an incredible amount of courage for him to stand up and share his perspective.  Plus, he's an amazing orator and seems like a superstar politician in the making.

The world need more Zach Wahls.

Winter Blues

Thursday, January 20, 2011 | by Olivia | Labels: , , | 3 comments

Can it please be spring already??  I have a definite case of the winter blues.  I usually love winter, but I'm so over it right now.

Thankfully, I have a working laptop again (hello, new MacBook), so I've been distracting myself by creating these inspiration boards.  You know, for when I come into some serious cash, and also for when I'm in-shape!  A girl can dream...

Spring Favorites (via ShopStyle):

For all my fashionista-minded friends out there, check out ShopStyle!  It's a cite that pulls from thousands of stores/brands and has a ton of selection.  It's nice to go to one place and browse a mix of style and prices.  It's the perfect place for ideas, and they have everything from clothing to furniture.

Dangerous but very fun :)

Quantum Leap

Wednesday, December 29, 2010 | by Olivia | Labels: , | 1 comments

I'm not a huge fan of New Year's resolutions, only because I have a tendency to be over zealous and set lofty goals that never really seem to pan out.  But, along with so many others, I'm hoping to continue to work on being healthy and getting into shape in 2011.  As to not get caught up in the numbers game, I'm planning to use a Quantum Scale to help me stay motivated.

I usually hate scales, and avoid them at all costs.  But after reading about this one in Women's Health, I'm giving it a shot.  What's nice is that this scale doesn't actually show your weight, rather you weigh in once at the beginning, and then after that, you get an update your total weight lost/gained, as a way to keeping your mind focused on the smaller goals, versus getting caught up in that scary three-digit number that pops up whenever you hop on.  I did a ton of research before deciding on this option, and it's definitely not for everyone (for instance, it only tracks one person's progress, so it wouldn't be helpful for a couple or family).

I'm hoping it will work for me.  I'm going to set small goals every month, and see how it goes.  Between running and (trying) to eat healthier, I'm hoping I'll strike a good balance.

Here's to 2011 :-)

Words of Wisdom

Wednesday, November 24, 2010 | by Olivia | Labels: , , | 1 comments

Sorry for the blogging hiatus -- things have been a bit of a roller coaster over the past few weeks, and are just now leveling out.  But I'm here.  And just in time for Thanksgiving!  Since my family is out of town this week, I'll be spending the holiday with family friends.  And I'm cooking up a storm for the first time in awhile.  I'll post pictures, but I'm planning to make mashed potatoes, biscuits, a veggie dish, and the now infamous pumpkin bread.  Yum!  Very happy that I get to use my parent's Le Creuset set as well.

P.S.  I came across this quote today and I think it's pure wisdom.  Marilyn Monroe is the woman.

"I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." ~ Marilyn Monroe

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Have a fun and safe holiday. :-)

Faces of the NYC Marathon

Monday, November 8, 2010 | by Olivia | Labels: , | 2 comments

The New York Times published a great feature this weekend called "Faces at the Finish."  It's an interactive gallery of 100 different people right after crossing the finish line of the NYC Marathon.  It's quite a mix of runners -- some young, some older and people from all around the world.  Very inspirational :)

P.S. I did my first Couch to 5K workout this morning, and the whole timed walk/run thing makes it go so much more quickly.  I did two miles in 25 minutes at the walk/run pace (bumped it up slightly from the suggested 20 minutes).  And thank you, time change for making my 6:00 a.m. wake up call a bit less painful!

Just Do It

I came across this video last night and it totally inspired me.  I even got my lazy ass out of bed this morning for a 6:30 spin class.  Miracles do happen!

Check it out.  I got a little teary eyed towards the end... I'm a total sap.

"If you want to do it... all you have to do is do it."  Check out Ben's blog at http://bendoeslife.tumblr.com/.  Amazing.
